While similar in function and style, the main difference between a vest and bodywarmers is the weight of the garment. Vests are usually more lightweight in design and can be used as a mid-layer, or worn though warmer seasons. Body warmers tend to be bulkier and are more often used as outer layers.

The word gilet [pronounced "ZHEE-lay"] derives from the Spanish 'Jileco' or 'Chaleco'-  a sleeveless jacket, much like a waistcoat or vest that forms part of traditional Spanish clothing. We typically refer to this as a 'vest' in the USA.
