Women's Tweed Jackets

Tweed fabrics are sometimes referred to in the USA as 'Wool Plaids' because they are often woven with elaborate windowpane designs, although more subtle patterns such as houndstooth and herringbone are also common. This traditional very tightly woven wool has become synonymouse with Ireland, Scotland and England. Originally designed for rugged outdoor use, this method of weaving with natural wool fibers creates a robust fabric that has good wind resistance while retaining breathability. The fabric lends itself to be used in anything from refined, tailored garments to robust overcoats used for field sports.

Tweed is made from tightly woven dyed wool which has a natural component, lanolin, that resists moisture. Tweed is not entirely waterproof and should be dried carefully and naturally without applying heat, to retain its shape.

Well looked after tweed should last a very long time. Tweed is tightly woven, making it resistant to snagging and pilling and the lanolin in the yarn has a natural stain resistance. If your tweed gets wet do not apply heat as it can warp the shape but instead, hang your tweed up and let it air dry to keep it in the best possible condition.

A tweed coat is best suited to cooler seasons however tweed can be worn all year round, being appropriate for a number of occasions. Tweed is densely woven so is more frequently worn in autumn and winter, chosen for its warmth, although some tweed is designed to be light-weight and retain less heat, ideal for warmer seasons.
